A Brazos County detention officer was arrested early Tuesday by College Station police on charges stemming from an alleged family violence incident.
Dwayne Richards, who was off duty at the time, was arrested on charges of assault of a family or household member by impeding breath or circulation and interfering with an emergency call, according to the Brazos County Sheriff’s Office.
The incident was investigated by the College Station Police Department, which subsequently arrested Richards.
The sheriff’s office said it launched an internal investigation after being notified of the arrest. Richards has been suspended pending the outcome of that investigation.
Richards has worked as a detention officer with the Brazos County Sheriff’s Office since August 2024.
The sheriff’s office said in a statement that the community expects “a high level of professionalism, accountability, and integrity” from its employees and that the agency shares those expectations.
The criminal charges remain allegations, and Richards is presumed innocent unless proven guilty in court.
