Residents of Bryan and College Station will have a unique opportunity to witness history in motion as Union Pacific’s famed Big Boy No. 4014 steam locomotive makes a stop in Bryan on Tuesday, October 8, 2024. This visit is part of the locomotive’s “Heartland of America Tour,” which spans 10 states and includes several key stops in Texas.
Big Boy No. 4014, the world’s largest operating steam locomotive, will be visible at the Wellborn Road and F & B Road crossing in Bryan. While there will be no public access to the locomotive during its stop, rail enthusiasts and history buffs can still catch a glimpse of this iconic piece of American railroading as it departs later that day.
The locomotive is one of only eight surviving Big Boys out of the 25 originally built during World War II, and it remains the only one still in operation. Its visit to Bryan is part of Union Pacific’s ongoing efforts to connect communities with the rich heritage of America’s railroads.
Union Pacific has emphasized the importance of safety during the tour, reminding all spectators to stay at least 25 feet back from the tracks and to avoid trespassing on railroad property.
For those interested in following the progress of Big Boy No. 4014 or learning more about its history, Union Pacific has made a real-time tracking map available on its Steam Club website.
